Samsung is following the lead of rival Apple with the announcements that the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge will be available in pink gold and that Samsung Pay will be rolled out in Singapore by 2Q16.
More than six months after Apple released the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in rose gold, Samsung has announced that the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge are now available in “pink gold”.
The new pink gold Galaxy S7 and S7 edge have debuted in Korea, and will soon be available in select markets, the company said. The release will be in addition to the other available colour choices of black onyx, gold platinum, white pearl, and silver titanium.
Samsung said the decision to expand the colour range to include pink gold is because the “skin-toned inspired” colour is “intended to soothe and incorporate a touch of gentleness, radiance, and sophistication to the smartphones’ design”, as well as provide a so-called “sense of comfort”.
Apple reported last September that there was a pre-order frenzy for the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus in rose gold by its Chinese customers.
The introduction of the colour was a commercial decision after Apple deemed the colour would be popular in the Chinese market, following the uptake of its gold-coloured iPhones.
On Wednesday, Samsung also announced the rollout of Samsung Pay in Singapore, a day after Apple’s digital wallet service was launched in the country.
But unlike Apple Pay, which is only available to customers with American Express credit cards in Singapore and Australia, Samsung Pay’s partnership ecosystem includes American Express, MasterCard, Visa, and major banks such as DBS/POSB, OCBC Bank, and Standard Chartered.
Singapore will be the first market in Southeast Asia to roll out Samsung Pay when it becomes available in Q2 2016, joining South Korea, the United States, and China.
“Singapore’s connectivity and openness are ideal conditions for our new mobile service to thrive, together with the interest and readiness of consumers here in adopting this new method of payment,” said Injong Rhee, EVP and head of R&D, software and services of mobile communications business at Samsung.
Samsung Pay will be available on the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 4G+, Galaxy S6 edge+ 4G+, Galaxy S7 4G+, and S7 edge 4G+ upon its launch in Singapore.
